Introducing: Communities for Children
Child poverty is one of the most critical challenges in the UK today. It is a complex and deep-rooted social issue, and the impact it has on young lives varies with every individual and every place.
Here at BBC Children in Need, we know the ‘wide-reaching’ impact that poverty has on the health outcomes, relationships and future life chances of children and young people, and we know that something must be done urgently.
That is why we are proud to be part of Communities for Children; a £15 million funding programme dedicated to tackling child poverty in the UK, in partnership with City Bridge Foundation, The National Lottery Community Fund and Pears Foundation.
The programme will build strong local partnerships, support community leadership and amplify the voices of children and young people to reduce the impact of child poverty, and where possible, tackle the root causes.

The first four locations and organisations, each set to receive £1.5 million over five years, are:
- Wishaw, North Lanarkshire (Scotland)– The Corra Foundation which works with people in their communities to encourage positive change, opportunities, fairness and growth of aspirations, which improve quality of life.
- Holyhead, Anglesey (Wales) – Medrwn Môn which supports communities and voluntary groups across Anglesey to become independent, resilient and resourceful.
- Hackney (London) – Coffee Afrik CIC which creates spaces where young people are recognised for their strengths, aspirations and leadership.
- Seacombe, Wallasey (Liverpool City Region) – Right to Succeed which works to ensure every child and young person has the opportunity to succeed, no matter where they live.
Communities for Children is being rolled out in phases, starting with the first four locations listed here and expanding to ten areas across the UK in 2027. These locations will include rural, urban and coastal areas with high levels of child poverty.

Communities for Children’s ambitious national programme will use a place-based approach in its delivery, targeting ten locations across the UK. This will include elements such as building strong local partnerships, engaging community leaders, and elevating the voices of children and young people, particularly those often left unheard.

How will the programme work?
Communities for Children will be shaped by the people and communities it supports by empowering voluntary sector organisations, community leaders, and children and young people with lived experience of poverty to form local partnerships.
These local partnerships will work closely with services and public bodies to create and implement practical plans to help reduce the effects of child poverty in those locations. The organisations that receive Communities for Children funding will take the lead in supporting these partnerships to grow and succeed.

Each of the ten locations will each be awarded £1.5 million across five years: long-term funding to help local communities design and deliver their own solutions. This means working closely with communities to respond to their unique challenges and opportunities in order to drive sustainable change for children and young people.
Unlike traditional funding programmes, Communities for Children will not be open for general applications. Instead, we will work with local communities to identify lead organisations and partners. The programmes aims to challenge stigma, inspire change and share learning across the broader sector, creating conditions in which children and young people can thrive – now and in the future.
