Main and Small Grants programmes – an update

We will do everything we can to help disadvantaged children and young people affected by the coronavirus outbreak. We are currently funding over 3,000 local charities and projects working with young people right across the UK, alongside our Emergency Essentials programme which provides vital support to families in crisis. Funding for these activities is needed right now and these projects have our full support at this difficult time.

As a result, we need to carefully consider how to allocate any future funding to ensure it will have the greatest impact on young people who will already have been, and will continue to be, significantly affected during these unprecedented times. With this in mind, we are pausing all new applications for our Main and Small Grants programmes; this is a temporary measure which will enable us to focus on supporting the existing local charities and projects in our grants portfolio right across the UK. This will enable us to take account of the effects of the pandemic on the UK’s children and young people, so that our funding can make a real difference now, and most importantly, to those who need it most.

In the coming weeks, we will announce specific measures to further support children and young people affected by the coronavirus outbreak, including additional funding. In the meantime, we want to express our gratitude to the thousands of project workers and volunteers who are working tirelessly to support vulnerable young people in communities throughout the UK, in such extraordinary circumstances.

Who we are

BBC Children in Need’s vision is that children and young people in the UK have a safe, happy and secure childhood and the chance to reach their potential.

Our role in achieving this vision is by making grants to charities and other non-profit organisations that support and work with children and young people who are disadvantaged and face challenges in their lives.

The people and projects we fund will:

  • Take the initiative and show clearly how they will make a difference which will improve children and young people’s lives.
  • Address the challenges the children and young people face, build their skills and resilience, empower them and extend their choices in life.
  • Involve children and young people in the design, delivery and evaluation of their work.
  • Be keen to keep learning about their work so that their ability to make a difference in children and young people’s lives can keep on improving.

Expectations

BBC Children in Need’s vision is that all children and young people in the UK have a safe, happy and secure childhood and the chance to fulfil their potential.

Projects we fund make differences in children’s lives that help prevent or overcome the effects of the disadvantages they face. Projects achieve these differences by either working directly with children or seeking to improve their social and physical environments.
