BBC Children in Need

Our story

BBC Children in Need shares stories in order to raise awareness about the challenges that children and families are facing, and how BBC Children in Need projects can help. Children are now facing an unprecedented challenge as a result of coronavirus (COVID-19) and it is as important as ever to raise awareness of the impact this is having, how it’s affecting BBC Children in Need projects, & how projects are continuing to support.

This is your opportunity to record your own video content to capture your thoughts and feelings as a BBC Children in Need project worker during the current ‘lockdown’. You might want to focus the videos across a day, a week, a month – it’s up to you!

Your stories are incredibly important to us, please contribute to Our Story here

Who do you want to be in the videos?

The videos would feature you speaking as a BBC Children in Need-funded project worker, and if appropriate, your colleagues (with permission). If you are supporting young people online/over the phone and feel it’s important to show this, we would need consent from the young people and if they are under 18, their parents/guardians.

What do we talk about?

We’ve put a handy list of prompt questions below for you to answer across your content and to think about. Please also feel free to record any significant events relating to the project or your role, or anytime you feel there’s something you want to share.

Where will the content be used?

We are hoping to feature this content on the BBC Children in Need digital platforms (for instance our website, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube) and also possibly in further BBC content in the coming weeks and months. We may also feature it in the BBC Children in Need Appeal around November 2020.

It’s important to say we can’t guarantee we will use your content as it is an ongoing project, so do make sure you’re comfortable with this. Please do familiarise yourself with the uploader terms of use and privacy policy

Are there any forms to fill in?

Consent is covered when you submit the content though we might be in touch about any additional content required, from you, or anyone in your video.

I don’t have a fancy camera and haven’t a clue how to film something!

That’s okay – filming on a mobile phone is absolutely fine. We’ve popped some instructions and tips on how to film below…

Filming the videos:

  • The clips can be filmed simply on a phone
  • Please film in landscape, rather than portrait
  • It’s usually good to keep people/ the action in the centre of the shot.
  • Try propping the phone up so it’s a steady shot
  • Make sure no one is wearing any clothing with visible brand logos or any slogan

Location:

  • Ideally don’t film against a blank wall – see if there’s somewhere in your house/office (if you’ve had to go in)/ garden that has something behind you.
  • Try and create a bit of ‘depth’ by filming around 1 metre in front of the background behind you
  • Avoid filming in front of a window or somewhere with loads of light behind you
  • Make sure that it’s nice and quiet before you start.

Questions

Below we have popped a list of questions for you to think about below and, if you feel comfortable, to answer in your videos.

No need to answer every question, you could start with five or so questions for the first video, and then answer a few more each week, whatever feels right to you.

There’s no need for these to be rehearsed or to be polished – it’s much better to speak off the cuff. It’s also absolutely fine if you laugh, smile or ‘mess up’.

If you find yourself becoming distressed, please stop filming until you feel better and don’t feel you have to continue.

Questions:

  1. What does daily life look like now?
  2. How are you feeling today – both generally and about the situation with COVID-19?
  3. How have you and your work adapted to the current ‘lockdown: are you able to continue to provide support to children and families? If so, how?
  4. How are you keeping in touch with your colleagues project and the children and families?
  5. What particular challenges are children you support facing as a result of COVID-19?
  6. What are the children and young people from your project telling you at the moment?
  7. What has it made you realise about the importance of your work/project?
  8. What are you missing?
  9. What’s been the biggest challenge?
  10. What’s been the biggest highlight/breakthrough?
  11. How might you and the project change coming out of this?
  12. Has it changed your perspective on the project? Is there anything you won’t take for granted after this is over?
  13. What are you looking forward to the most in regards to the project, once things can return to normal?
